Modernism in interior design can be seen between 1880 and 1940. The movement can be characterised by moving away from the use of traditional materials such as wood, and the increasing use of industrial materials such as glass and concrete. Examples of significant modernist architects include: Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Work by both architects is very different however they successfully evidence the characteristics of the Modernist movement. The modernist movement created a strong focus on simplicity and clarity of form whilst being conscious of disregarding noise in design (Decor Aid).
Modernist furniture of the period also displayed the previously mentioned qualities. A strong example is the Saarinen chair by Eero Saarinen pictured below.
